  • Searching for the truth

I read recently that the internet is not really reaching people in diversifying or educating. People just use the internet to search and confirm an opinion they already hold.

    Regardless of facts present elsewhere.

    Is this what you do?

  • I think most of the time I am searching for new information.  Sometimes, I do like to confirm an opinion.

  • No… actually I look up lots of things I don’t know. I do also confirm things or settle arguments… most recently though I have googled the anatomy of an octopus so the kids and I could see where it pooped from… now that’s knowlege worth having.

Hope all is well on you side of the world!

  • Perhaps that’s what we all do unconsciously, that’s the great power of the interconnected web that we have…
profoundly it allows us to reach and grab and share things we probably knew we knew or didn’t know about ourselves or others.
I’d like to think i didn’t hold an opinion to my use of the internet.  But eh, I probably do.
I wont go to a site twice if i find it boring or not intriguing  enough…its like *high school clicks* all over again.

  • I like when I find different things on the web but just to play devil’s advocate here, typically when people are searching for something, they’re going to be searching for something specific. Most likely whatever specific subject they are searching for, they will somehow insert their feelings into their search terms (i.e. if someone were researching something like pro or anti roe v. wade, they are probably going to come up with “flavored” results). It takes a lot more for people to step outside of their boxes! This is definitely an interesting thing to ponder.

  • I don’t believe I do. I read a wide variety, and as such my opinions shift regularly. (That makes me sound like I sway with the wind…)

  • Mostly I research stuff I don’t know … like how to stir fry without burning the garlic.  Garlic tastes nasty when burned.  I guess I’m just much more utilitarian in my use of the internet … shopping, doing school work, and looking up factual info.

I don’t know that the internet is any worse than television or radio.  People tend to listen to stations or watch shows that espouse opinions similar to their own.  I don’t know any liberals who listen to conservative radio or vice versa just in the interest of being open minded.  Might be something worth trying, though, to broaden my horizons.

Nice to know we’re both alive … I’ve missed, missed, missed you!

  • I enjoy reading and considering other people’s opinions. I don’t know how much it changes my fundamental opinions, but I’m always willing to consider an alternate view when presented rationally and without venom.

  • No Elisabeth , I use internet like an encyclopedia . When I remember something but I have forgotten the most part I go on the Internet . It is a true mine and you learn much .
I don’ t use it for politic .
By the way how are you ?
     have a great Sunday
    Love

  • I’m sure to an extent I do use the net to enforce an opinion but I do try to look at all sides before making up my mind.  I do use the net to learn new things and for entertainment too.

  • Because I know I have so much to learn, I know for sure that my opinions will change if I hear a good argument about something. Some things, however, will not change – such as things related to Christ and Christianity. Still, since some things are left to interpretation, I do read and then decide if it’s valid, based on the Bible. :)

Btw, Liz, it’s Addy here! *Hugs*
