  • old doors and door parts.

    Aachen a cathedral doorknob

This is on the cathedral in Aachen….on a side door!

    the entry to our building

The front door of our old apartment building in Bavaria.

    bronze temple doors

Bronze doors in the Forum in Rome

    Door Plate

My favorite door plate in Prague.

    punishment shelf

The door leading to the punishment shelf.  So that everyone can see you publicly humiliated.

    And…

last but not least, possibly my favorite door of all.

We came upon it quite by chance in Prague on a side street.  I love all the details of it, the stained glass, the clock, the enameled iron work, the shape, everything about it is perfect.  And if I hadn’t been rushed by Barry and Mike I would have taken more pictures of it close up to enjoy all the little details, alas this is the only one I took.

    perfect door

If I find more of my old door pictures i’ll post those too, i think this is all for now.

  • Fascinating. I especially like the punishment shelf. Can you imagine? I wonder if people would throw things at the person getting punished?

  • These door are so beautiful. I love the patena on the bronze door and the last one is breathtaking. How wonderful to be able to walk around and see the artisty and to experience the history.

hhmmm…I’m thinking the punishment shelf might not be such a bad idea these days. But of course it would only work if a person had personal pride and wasn’t a candidate for the Jerry Springer show! hahaha

I just really LOVE that last door. Thanks for giving me a glimpse into some more of your interesting and facinating world.

I hope you’re feeling better and are back on track. You’ve had so much to deal with. It’s good to see some evidence that you’re out and about again!

  • Wow!  I love the first one and the last one.  Can’t have those here because they are not mass produced.

  • LOVED THIS

  • Excellent pictures, Elizabeth! I especially like the bronze doors in Rome. And the door to the punishment shelf is very haunting. I suppose any one of us could have been led thru that door at some given time in our lives… Thanks for posting these.

  • Those doors are AMAZING. I love them. I wish that I had a punishment shelf.

  • Wowie. These pictures made me smile big!
Now i want to go back to europe!

lovely lovely thank you for sharing

  • Hey, I came over from Angi the door ladys place….these are just amazing doors, my daughter is going to Europe in a few weeks, I’m going to have her find the door in Prague and take more pictures   Have a nice weekend!

  • I’m over from Angi’s too.  I want the door in the first picture, that has got to be the coolest door knob ever.  Thanks for sharing!  Peace

  • Great doors mom! You should put up some of the ones from Ireland too!

  • I have a thing for old doors too! Windows too.  I saw some great ones in Italy.   I must get my butt back to Europe. The architecture is infinitely more interesting there.

  • The craftsmanship in all of these is amazing.  The details in that last one are gorgeous.

I agree with piqued, there are too many publicity seekers who’d enjoy being on the punishment shelf.  Can we get them out there and then lock the door?  Ooops, sorry, that’s probably mean, huh !?

Keep digging in those photos.  You’ve got some beautiful and interesting ones.

  • Love, love, love those photos.  Thanks for sharing.  What you said over at my site is so, so true — we Americans are so busy upgrading and replacing anything that we have very little historic beauty to appreciate.

Sad to say, I have never been to Europe, something I intend to rectify in the next few years.

  • Holy crap — that last door in particular is STUNNING.  And I had the most interesting insight while looking at the door to the Forum — suddenly I could imagine people walking past it in togas, tunics et al, going about their business on a sunny day.  Talk about making the past come alive!

  • I like the punishment shelf.lol

  • Pragues is a town of art . Not surpising Elizabeth you found such  marvels . I like too the last  door . .
I wonder what this last looks inside with the effects of the light in the stained window .
We have at our home a door in iron with a grill in forged iron style 1930 . But who care ?

    Love

    Michel

  • I love all of these-so unique and classy!  That last door is wonderful.  The punishment shelf, huh?  Wonder how long ago that was last used?  Thanks for your sweet words!

  • RYC I agree with you. It’s better to miss having a pet than to miss the pet.

  • Beautiful pictures :)   Especially the patina’ed door– so lovely.
